Cesarean Birth Story

by Amy Anderson

I opened my own baby book one day and smiled at all of the dates and milestones that my mother had entered over the course of my first year of life. My name, my weight and my eye colour. As I skimmed each page, I came across a letter that she had written to me. She must have written a few years later, as it mentioned me helping out with household chores and keeping my little brother in line. She went on to say how proud she was and how she could never understand how much she could love someone so small. But what got me was the end. She recalled my little hand place in hers and how one, I will let go and grasp the hand of my own child. It was then, that my journey began.

His name was Graysen, we were having a little boy and were going to get to meet in him in late October. October seemed so far away but then again, we had a ton of things to do, many items to buy and questions that needed to be asked. Each week my belly grew and my anticipation mixed with fear followed. But then October came and went and my little man's appearance was still a mystery.

Apparently he like where he was because he seemed to have no intentions of leaving, my doctor told us. However, I was ready. I had a very big baby brewing… I just knew it and my premonitions were confirmed, because at one of my weekly appointments my uterus measured 48 cm. My obstetrician scratched her head because I was only 40 weeks along. Not terribly overdue, so she doubled checked. Yup, 48cm.

Before my appointment was over she had scheduled me a non stress test and another test that would measure the amount of amniotic fluid inside, with instructions to bring my bag along.…just in case. That ultrasound was a success and they saw nothing to cause a concern, only that of an 8-9 pound baby. A few more days past and I finally received a date for an induction that was to happen over the course of the next two days.

My mother held my hand as we walked down the maternity floor hallway (my husband was at work so she accompanied me). She waited patiently in the waiting room as the doctor prepared to insert the foley catheter in hopes to ripen my cervix and urge my little boy out. If it was successful, it should begin the labouring process and I was to return the next morning to give birth. Try and get a good night sleep my doctor instructed as she waved my mother back in the room.

Call me crazy, but tomorrow I am going to give birth for the first and she expects me to rest.
